Microsoft decide that Xbox Live isn’t making them enough money, Nintendo decide that the DS range is making them too much money, and the Tron Collectors Edition is announced… with a Light Cycle!

OK, so it’s not a real Light Cycle, but if you believed it was, you probably have bigger problems. The collectors edition of the Tron game has been announced, and if you’re planning to play it on an Xbox 360 or a Wii, you will be the proud owner of a miniature Light Cycle and display case.

Microsoft have announced that they will be raising the price of an Xbox Live gold membership (that’s the one you have to pay for, not the free one), as of November 1. It’s being raised from $50 to $60 for the annual subscription. In the (linked to below) PCWorld article, writer, Jared Newman, expresses concern that this could be the start of consistent rise in the price of Xbox Live, citing that one analyst thinks it could reach $100 in time… which is a bit of a vague statement; the price of milk could reach $100 over time, if the currency keeps getting weaker and weaker.

I think Jared’s final point on the matter is a good one, however; if do Microsoft keep raising the cost of Xbox Live (that don’t have a track record of doing it, yet), people will think twice about getting an Xbox over a PS3. Xbox Live get’s away with charging while PlayStation Network is free because it is a better service! But if the price gets high enough, the superior service won’t be superior enough to still be considered value for money.

Nintendo have announced that the DSi  and DSi XL will be getting a $20 price cut as of September 12. This is a marginally surprising move as, while sales of the DS have dipped somewhat, it still outsells its competitor, the PSP, by a hefty margin. Personally I think this is about numbers; Nintendo like to show off their record sales figures and their chart topping monthly numbers, and this makes the DS range even more of an impulse buy than it already was!

So that was today’s ToN. It is looking increasingly likely that this post will be daily (it has been for over a week now), so, all being well, there will be another one tomorrow.
