If you were one of the 67.9% of the population that voted “No” to an alternative voting system, using the justification that you didn’t like the thought of “this party” or “that party” getting into power, you are a problem.

I’ve heard a number of people say that the reason they voted no, was because they didn’t like the idea that the BNP, or UKIP, or [insert party name here] could get into power. At best, this shows a fundamental misunderstanding of AV, at worst, it shows that you are a bigoted moron. You see, if the British National Party were to get into power under AV, it would be because the majority of the nation wanted them there!

Under the current system, a lot of people (anecdotal) vote either Labour or Conservative, not because they support that party, but because they know no other party will win, and they don’t want their vote to be wasted.

What you, as a “No” voter who justified your vote in this way, have enforced, is a system that says, “Whosoever gains the majority of public votes will be placed in power and run the country… as long as it’s not “X” Party.” That is not a democracy.

Furthermore, what you 70% of voters have voted for, is that the other 30% of us should not have a vote, because you disagree with what we would vote for.

Thank you very much.
